Speed & Road Conditions
Speed limits are maximums for good conditions. Safe drivers slow down for weather, traffic and hazards.
Default speed limits
In a built-up area with no signs the default limit is 50 km/h. Outside built-up areas, where no signs are posted, the default limit in Western Australia is 110 km/h. Always obey lower posted limits where they are shown.
School zones and reduced limits
School zones have a reduced speed limit during posted times to protect children. Slow to the signed limit and watch for children near the road, at crossings and getting on or off buses.
Adjusting to conditions
Reduce speed and increase your following distance in rain, fog, at night, or on gravel and unfamiliar roads, because grip and visibility are lower and stopping distances grow. Use headlights so you can see and be seen.
