Rules of the Road & Right of Way

Right-of-way rules keep intersections and freeways orderly by deciding who proceeds first. In Wisconsin you yield, merge at speed, and make room for emergency vehicles.

Intersections

At a four-way stop the first to arrive goes first; if two arrive together, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right. When turning left, yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians before you turn.

Roundabouts and merging

Enter a roundabout to the right and yield to pedestrians and to traffic already circulating. When entering a freeway, use the ramp to match the speed of traffic and merge into an available gap.

Emergency vehicles

When an emergency vehicle approaches with lights and siren, pull to the right and stop until it passes. Move over or slow down for stopped emergency and maintenance vehicles as well.
