Safe Driving & Sharing the Road
Most crashes come from following too closely or failing to see others. Managing space and staying alert protects you and the people around you.
Following distance
Keep a time gap of at least three to four seconds behind the vehicle ahead, and increase it in rain, fog, or snow. More space gives you time to react and stop safely.
Motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrians
Motorcycles are entitled to a full lane and are easy to overlook, so give them room and check your blind spots. Watch for bicyclists and yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
School buses and seat belts
Stop for a school bus showing flashing red lights and an extended stop arm, and stay stopped until it withdraws them. All drivers and passengers must wear a properly fastened seat belt, and younger children must use a child restraint.
