Signs & Signals
Wisconsin traffic signs use shape and color so you can read them at a glance. The knowledge process even includes a separate 15-question highway signs test, so knowing signs cold is essential.
Shapes and colors
A red octagon means STOP and a downward triangle means YIELD. Yellow diamonds warn of hazards ahead, orange marks work zones, and white rectangular signs are regulatory, such as posted speed limits you must obey.
Traffic signals
A steady red means stop and stay stopped, while a steady yellow warns that red is coming, so stop if you can do so safely. Green means go once the intersection is clear and you have yielded to traffic or pedestrians already in it.
Pavement markings
Double solid yellow center lines separate opposing traffic and may not be crossed to pass. White lines separate lanes traveling the same direction, and a broken line may be crossed when it is safe.
