Inspections and Tests

Plumbing is inspected in stages that follow the work, and each stage must pass before it is covered. Underground or below-slab piping is inspected and tested before backfill, the rough-in or top-out is inspected after the walls are piped but before they are closed, and the final is done after fixtures are set. Plans, Isometrics, and Schedules

The master plumber must both read and produce construction drawings. Estimating and Scheduling

Running a plumbing business requires turning drawings into a price and a timeline. Estimating begins with a takeoff, the systematic counting and measuring of materials from the drawings, so unit prices can be applied to build the material cost. Labor hours are estimated separately, then overhead and profit are layered onto the combined direct cost so the business covers its expenses and earns a margin; overhead is typically applied first and profit on the overhead-loaded cost. Scheduling converts estimated labor hours into a duration by dividing total hours by the crew's daily capacity, so a 240 labor-hour job with a three-person crew working eight-hour days takes ten working days. Accurate takeoffs, realistic labor factors, and honest scheduling are what keep bids competitive and projects profitable.
