ServSafe Manager pass rate & how many times you can retake it
The National Restaurant Association publishes no pass rate for the Food Protection Manager exam — we checked its own Examinee Handbook and Manager FAQs in September 2026 rather than assuming. What the Association does publish is the passing score: 90 multiple-choice questions, "a passing score is 70 percent or better", certification valid for 5 years, and a retest policy of no more than two attempts in 30 days and no more than four in 12 months. Any exact "ServSafe pass rate" figure you see online is an unofficial estimate from a prep site, not a number from the Association.
Does ServSafe publish a pass rate?
No — and this time that is a checked answer, not an assumption. We read the National Restaurant Association's ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification Examinee Handbook and its Manager FAQ pages in September 2026. They are specific about the exam length, the passing score, the retest policy, score reporting and the appeals process. They contain no pass rate — not a first-time one and not an overall one — and no statistics section at all.
That is why the "65% first-attempt pass rate" and the "70–80%" you will find quoted around the web are worth nothing: they come from training providers and prep sites, and none of them cites an Association document. We are not repeating them.
The one "pass" number the Association actually defines is the passing score. The handbook states that the examination has 90 multiple-choice questions and that "A passing score is 70 percent or better." It does not publish how many of those 90 are scored versus pilot, so we do not translate the 70% into a number of correct answers. That is a passing SCORE — the bar you personally have to clear — not a pass RATE, which would be the share of candidates who clear it. Conflating the two is the single most common error on this topic.

ServSafe Manager facts
How many times can you retake the ServSafe Manager exam?
There is no fixed lifetime cap. Here is how retakes work:
- If you don't pass, you can retake the exam. Each attempt uses an exam voucher, so a retake generally means purchasing another voucher.
- The Association's published retest policy: you may take the exam twice within a 30-day period. If a third or later attempt is needed, you must wait at least 60 days from your last attempt, and no more than four attempts are allowed in any 12-month period.
- Not passing is the only legitimate reason to retake the exam — you cannot re-sit it to improve a passing score.
- Once you pass, the certification is valid for 5 years per the Association ("ServSafe Certification is valid for five years"), but it also tells you to check your state or local laws, some of which recognize it for 3. After that you recertify by taking the exam again.
The best way to pass on the first try
Retakes cost time and another voucher, so the goal is to pass the first time. The most reliable way is to practice real questions until you consistently clear 70%. PrepPass has free ServSafe Manager practice questions with answer explanations and a full timed mock exam — no signup required.

What is the ServSafe Manager pass rate?+
There isn't a published one. We read the National Restaurant Association's own ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification Examinee Handbook and its Manager FAQs in September 2026: they publish the exam length, the passing score, the retest policy and the appeals process, and no pass rate — first-time or overall. The "65%" and "70–80%" figures circulated online come from prep sites and training providers, none of which cites an Association document.
How many times can you take the ServSafe Manager exam?+
The Association publishes the rule: twice within a 30-day period; if a third or later attempt is needed you must wait at least 60 days from your last attempt; and no more than four attempts in any 12-month period. Not passing is the only legitimate reason to retake it.
What score do you need to pass the ServSafe Manager exam?+
At least 70%. The Examinee Handbook states that the examination has 90 multiple-choice questions and that "A passing score is 70 percent or better." The handbook does not publish how many of the 90 questions are scored versus pilot, so we don't convert that percentage into a number of correct answers. Online-proctored results are usually shown immediately.
What happens if you fail the ServSafe Manager exam?+
You can retake it, subject to the published retest limits (two attempts per 30 days, a 60-day wait before a third, four per 12 months), and each attempt uses a voucher. Studying real practice questions until you consistently clear 70% is the most reliable way to pass the next attempt.
How long is the ServSafe Manager certification valid?+
The Association states "ServSafe Certification is valid for five years" and tells you to check your state or local laws and your employer's standards for re-certification requirements — some jurisdictions recognize it for 3. You recertify by taking the exam again before it expires.
