Connectors and Prepositions
Linking words and prepositions show the relationships between ideas. This chapter covers contrast, purpose, and the fixed prepositions that follow common adjectives and phrases.
Linking Words of Contrast and Result
'Nevertheless' and 'however' signal contrast, 'therefore' signals result, and 'moreover' adds information. Note that 'despite' is followed by a noun phrase ('despite the rain'), while 'although' introduces a full clause with a verb.
Dependent Prepositions
Many adjectives and phrases take a fixed preposition: 'good at', 'in order to', 'interested in'. These pairings must be memorised because they rarely follow a logical rule.
