Chapter 3 of 332% of exam

Intervention and Practice

ASWB gives Intervention and Practice 32% of the 2026 Masters exam. It covers practice concepts, intervention methods and techniques, practice evaluation and research, and supervision and administration. The PrepPass study guide covers these areas in four chapters and includes a 122-question practice exam in two timed sections.

Helping relationships and interventions

Strengths-based and empowerment approaches build on what clients can do. Crisis intervention is brief and safety-first. Know the core features of CBT, DBT, motivational interviewing, mindfulness-based stress reduction and EMDR, and why harm reduction meets people where they are. Group stages (forming, storming, norming, performing, adjourning) and family therapy models (structural, Bowenian, strategic) are regular topics.

Evaluation and research

Single-system designs compare repeated measures against a baseline. Formative evaluation asks whether a program is feasible before launch; process evaluation asks how it is being delivered; outcome evaluation asks whether goals were met; impact evaluation asks whether the program caused the change. Reliability is consistency; validity is measuring the right thing. Research participants give voluntary consent and may withdraw without penalty.

Supervision and administration

Supervision has administrative, educational and supportive functions, and supervisees share responsibility for it — bringing learning needs and high-risk cases first and telling clients their information is shared in supervision. Supervisors can be vicariously liable for supervisees' acts. Administrators build safe, inclusive workplaces and support staff self-care.
