Basic Grammar
At A2 level you show control of the simple building blocks of English: present and past tenses, questions, and common verb patterns. This chapter reviews the everyday structures that appear most often at elementary level.
Present Simple and Present Continuous
Use the present simple for habits and facts ('She works in a shop'). Add -s for he/she/it. Use the present continuous ('am/is/are + -ing') for things happening now ('They are playing football').
Past Simple
Use the past simple for finished actions in the past. Regular verbs add -ed ('walked'); many common verbs are irregular ('go/went', 'have/had', 'see/saw'). In questions and negatives use 'did' with the base verb: 'Did you go?', 'I didn't see it.'
Questions and Short Answers
Form yes/no questions with 'do/does/did' or with 'be': 'Are you tired?' 'Yes, I am.' Wh- questions begin with words like what, where, when, who and how much.
