Prepositions and Articles

Small words like in, on, at, a and the are used all the time in English. This chapter reviews the most common patterns for time, place and articles.

Prepositions of Time and Place

Use 'at' for clock times ('at 6 o'clock'), 'on' for days ('on Monday'), and 'in' for months and years ('in July'). For place, use 'at' for a point, 'in' for inside, and 'on' for a surface.

a, an and the

Use 'a/an' when you talk about one thing for the first time or a general one ('a dog'). Use 'the' when it is clear which one you mean ('the dog next door'). Use 'an' before a vowel sound ('an apple').
