Word Formation

B1 tasks often ask you to change a base word into a noun, adjective or adverb. This chapter reviews the common prefixes and suffixes.

Noun and Adjective Suffixes

Endings like -ment ('agree' → 'agreement'), -tion ('decide' → 'decision'), -ness ('happy' → 'happiness') form nouns. Endings like -ful, -less and -ous form adjectives ('care' → 'careful/careless').

Negative Prefixes

Prefixes such as un-, in-, im- and dis- reverse meaning: 'happy' → 'unhappy', 'possible' → 'impossible', 'agree' → 'disagree'. Choose the prefix that fits the base word.
