Chapter 3 of 518% of exam

Word Formation

B2 Use of English includes a word-formation task where you transform a root word, sometimes adding a prefix and a suffix and making internal spelling changes. This chapter reviews the productive affixes.

Multiple Affixes

A single item may need both a prefix and a suffix: 'success' → 'unsuccessful', 'help' → 'unhelpfully'. Read the sentence to decide the part of speech and whether the meaning is negative.

Spelling Changes

Adding a suffix can change spelling: 'able' → 'ability', 'strong' → 'strength', 'decide' → 'decision'. Recognising these irregular transformations is part of the task.
