Word Formation in Business Writing

Reports and emails often require you to choose the correct form of a word. This chapter shows how sentence position signals whether a noun, verb, adjective, or adverb is needed.

Nouns from Adjectives

Formal writing often nominalises: 'effective' becomes 'effectiveness', 'reduce' becomes 'reduction'. After 'the ___ of', a noun is usually required.

Adjectives and Adverbs

Use an adjective before a noun ('a reliable partner') and an adverb to describe an action ('delivered promptly').
