Inversion for Emphasis
When a negative or restrictive adverbial begins a clause, subject and auxiliary invert: 'Never had I seen such a mess', 'Not until later did she realise', 'Hardly had we arrived when it started.' The inversion is obligatory, not optional.
Cleft and Emphatic Structures
Cleft sentences foreground information: 'It was her patience that impressed me', 'What I need is a break.' They restructure a plain sentence to highlight one element.
Participle Clauses and Mixed Conditionals
Participle clauses condense information ('Having finished early, she left'). Mixed conditionals combine time frames: 'If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now' (past condition, present result).
