Word Formation

The C1 word-formation task often requires compound derivations, less common affixes, and words that shift stress or spelling. This chapter reviews the productive but tricky patterns.

Compound and Complex Derivations

You may need to combine elements or add multiple affixes: 'wide' → 'widespread', 'break' → 'breakthrough', 'sense' → 'insensitivity'. Analyse the required part of speech and meaning carefully.

Less Common Affixes

Affixes such as -hood, -ship, -en, -ify and mis- expand meaning: 'like' → 'likelihood', 'member' → 'membership', 'length' → 'lengthen', 'inform' → 'misinform'.
