How Government Works
This chapter explains Canada's system of government, its parliament, and how leaders are chosen.
A Constitutional Monarchy
Canada is a federal state, a parliamentary democracy, and a constitutional monarchy. The Sovereign is the head of state and is represented in Canada by the Governor General, while the Prime Minister is the head of government. Powers are shared between the federal and provincial governments.
Parliament and Elections
Parliament has three parts: the Sovereign, the appointed Senate, and the elected House of Commons, whose members are called Members of Parliament (MPs). After an election, the leader of the party with the most seats in the House of Commons usually becomes Prime Minister.
