This is the largest area of the test. It covers exploration, Confederation, and key moments in Canada's past.
Exploration and Settlement
The name 'Canada' likely comes from 'kanata,' an Iroquoian word for a village or settlement. French explorer Jacques Cartier claimed land for France in the 1530s. Later, United Empire Loyalists, loyal to the British Crown, moved north from the American colonies during and after the American Revolution.
Confederation and the Twentieth Century
In 1867 the Constitution Act created the Dominion of Canada, celebrated each year as Canada Day on July 1. Sir John A. Macdonald became Canada's first Prime Minister. In the First World War, the 1917 Battle of Vimy Ridge became a defining moment of national pride.
