What the SRE covers
The Statutes and Rules Exam (SRE), delivered online, tests the contractor-licensing law in A.R.S. Title 32, Chapter 10 and the Registrar's rules in A.A.C. Title 4, Chapter 9. It is an open-book exam, so the key skill is knowing how to locate answers quickly within those statutes and rules rather than memorizing every provision.
No separate Business Management exam
Unlike states that give a separate business-and-law exam, Arizona folds the business-management content into the SRE. There is no stand-alone Business Management examination, so applicants prepare for business topics - contracts, finances, and record-keeping - as part of the statutes-and-rules material.
When the SRE is waived
The SRE is generally required, but it is waived for an applicant who has been a qualifying party on an Arizona contractor license within the previous five years. Recent, demonstrated familiarity with Arizona's licensing law is what allows the exam to be skipped; otherwise every qualifying party must sit it.
