Salon Ecology and a Healthy Environment
Salon ecology means keeping the salon clean, safe, and healthy for clients and staff. It includes proper cleaning and disinfection of tools and surfaces, good ventilation to control fumes and dust from products, safe storage and handling of chemicals, and consistent infection-control habits. A well-kept environment protects everyone's health and reflects professionalism — it is a core duty, not an afterthought.
Chemical Safety and Safety Data Sheets
Professional products can be hazardous if mishandled, so manufacturers provide a Safety Data Sheet (SDS, formerly MSDS) for each product. The SDS lists hazardous ingredients, health and physical hazards, safe handling and storage, required protective equipment, and first-aid and emergency measures. Salons should keep SDS documents accessible for the products they use. Reading and following the SDS is part of a worker's right to know and of protecting clients.
Professionalism and Ethics
Professional ethics means acting with honesty and integrity: being truthful with clients about what a service can realistically achieve, respecting client confidentiality, and recommending only the services and retail products a client genuinely needs rather than upselling for its own sake. It also means staying within your scope of practice — never diagnosing or promising to cure medical conditions, and referring clients to a physician when appropriate. Reliability, good hygiene, and courtesy build the trust a career depends on.
