A working knowledge of the bones, muscles, and nerves of the head, face, and neck helps a cosmetologist give safe, effective massage and understand facial shape, while trichology grounds hair and scalp analysis. This chapter introduces those fundamentals.

Bones and Muscles of the Head and Neck

Key facial and cranial bones include the frontal bone (forehead and upper eye sockets), the zygomatic bones (cheekbones), the mandible (the movable lower jaw), the maxillae (upper jaw), and the occipital bone (back and base of the skull). Important muscles include the epicranius (with the frontalis raising the eyebrows), the orbicularis oculi (closing the eye), the masseter and temporalis (chewing), and the large trapezius, which covers the back of the neck and upper back and moves the head and shoulders. These structures guide where and how you massage.

Nerves of the Face and Neck

Two cranial nerves matter most in facial work. The fifth cranial nerve, the trifacial (trigeminal), is the chief sensory nerve of the face and also serves the chewing muscles. The seventh cranial nerve, the facial nerve, is the chief motor nerve of the face and controls the muscles of expression. Locating the motor points served by these nerves helps a cosmetologist perform a beneficial, relaxing massage. The nervous system as a whole coordinates the body's responses.

Trichology: The Study of Hair

Trichology is the scientific study of the hair and its diseases and care (from the Greek 'trichos,' hair). It underpins scalp and hair analysis — assessing density, texture, porosity, and elasticity, and recognizing scalp conditions. Related fields include onychology (the study of nails) and dermatology (the study of skin). A trichology-informed analysis helps you select appropriate services and know when a scalp or hair condition should be referred to a physician.
