Disinfection standards
Reusable, non-porous implements are cleaned and then immersed in an EPA-registered disinfectant used per label directions between clients. Stations, chairs, and shared tools are cleaned and disinfected as well. Following the disinfectant's contact time is what actually kills pathogens.
Disposables and cross-contamination
Single-use items such as nail files, buffers, and wax applicators are discarded after one client because porous materials cannot be disinfected. Wax applicators must not be double-dipped, and a clean towel or drape is used for each client. These practices prevent spreading infection from client to client.
Incident response and equipment care
If a client bleeds, the practitioner stops, uses gloves and first aid, disinfects affected tools and surfaces, and disposes of contaminated disposables properly. Pedicure foot spas are drained, cleaned, and disinfected after each client to prevent bacterial infection — a frequently cited TDLR requirement.

How many training hours does Texas require for a cosmetology license?
Texas requires 1,000 hours for the Cosmetology Operator license — reduced from the former 1,500 hours. Candidates become eligible to sit for the written exam after 900 hours.
Who licenses cosmetologists in Texas?
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), through its Barbering and Cosmetology program, licenses cosmetologists. Both exams are contracted to PSI.
Does Texas still require a practical exam?
Yes. Despite the reduction in required hours, TDLR still requires passing both a written exam and a hands-on practical exam for the Operator license.
