How to Choose a CSLB Law & Business Study Guide (2026)

CSLB gives you two things for free: a Law and Business study guide (a PDF with the seven exam sections, their approximate weights and sample questions) and the California Contractors License Law & Reference Book, which CSLB calls the basic study reference and which you can read online free or buy in print. Paid options are contractor schools and publishers: printed study books, online or audio courses. The PrepPass guide is a downloadable book (PDF + EPUB, 400 pages, $24.99 one time) with 170 practice questions inside and 1,632 more free on this site. CSLB's own FAQ notes that no school is affiliated with CSLB.

CSLB's study guide and the online Reference Book are free, and so is the PrepPass question bank. If you want a book that teaches rather than a law reference, the PrepPass guide is $24.99; the printed options on this page were $64.00 (the Reference Book in print) and $150.00 (Peerless) on the day we checked.

Exam in two weeks

Read CSLB's study guide to see the seven sections and their weights, then spend most of your time on the two biggest: contracts (21%) and employment (20%). Work practice questions every day and look up anything you miss in the Reference Book.

You would rather listen than read

An audio course (License to Build) or a course with audio/video lessons (US Trade Test) fits better than any book, ours included.

You also need help with the application

Some schools include application help; US Trade Test's page says it helps you fill out the license application at no additional cost. A book, including ours, does not.

Questions people ask

Are the free CSLB practice tests online good enough, or should I buy a study book?

Free practice questions tell you what you do not know; they do not teach it. CSLB's own study guide lists the topics but has only three sample questions. If practice keeps turning up the same gaps (liens, payroll, contracts), a study book that explains them is worth buying. The PrepPass question bank has 1,632 free questions to find those gaps first.

Is there a PDF study guide for the CSLB Law and Business test with practice questions and explanations?

Yes. The PrepPass guide is PDF + EPUB, 400 pages, $24.99 one time, with 170 practice questions and explanations and a 14-day refund. CSLB's own study guide is also a free PDF, but it is a short topic list with three sample questions.

Do I need to go to a contractor school to pass the Law and Business exam?

No school is affiliated with CSLB: its exam FAQ says there are no schools or application preparation organizations affiliated with it, and it points applicants to its free study guides. CSLB names the California Contractors License Law & Reference Book as the basic study reference. A school is worth paying for if you want lessons, a set pace or help with the application.

How much does CSLB Law and Business prep cost?

On the day we checked: CSLB's study guide and the online Reference Book are free; the Reference Book in print is $64.00 plus tax and shipping; the PrepPass guide is $24.99; License to Build's audio course is $119; Peerless's printed guide is $150.00 ($250.00 with a practice exam); US Trade Test's course is $249.00. What does the PrepPass CSLB guide not include?

No printed copy, no audio or video lessons, no live class and no help with the application. It covers the Law and Business exam only, not trade exams, and it is not connected to CSLB.
