Connectors and Prepositions
Small linking words and prepositions carry a lot of meaning in everyday English. This chapter reviews prepositions of place, time connectors, and words that join ideas of contrast and purpose.
Prepositions of Place
Something inside a container takes 'in' ('in the drawer'), while 'on' means resting on a surface. Picturing the position helps you choose.
Time and Contrast Connectors
'As soon as' means immediately when something happens, and 'but' shows contrast: 'He was tired, but he kept working.' Matching the connector to the meaning is the core skill.
Expressing Purpose
'To' plus a base verb expresses purpose: 'leave early to avoid the traffic'. 'For' cannot be followed directly by a base verb in this role.
