Everyday Vocabulary
A strong vocabulary covers feelings, descriptions, and common phrasal verbs. This chapter looks at adjective choices and everyday expressions, and shows how context points to the right word. Reading the whole sentence is the key skill.
Describing Feelings and Things
Precise adjectives matter: 'exhausted' means very tired, 'confusing' means hard to understand, and 'vast' means very large. Context clues tell you which one fits.
Phrasal Verbs
Phrasal verbs change meaning with the particle: 'turn off' the light (switch off) differs from 'turn up' (increase). Learning them as whole units avoids confusion.
Opposites in Context
Choosing between opposites depends on the sentence: a 'quiet' voice fits not waking a baby, while 'loud' would contradict it. Reading for intent guides the choice.
