Impaired driving is a serious crime in Idaho, and new teen drivers earn full privileges in stages that start unusually early. Knowing these limits protects your license and everyone on the road.
Adult and under-21 limits
A driver 21 or older is legally impaired at 0.08 percent BAC, and drivers under 21 face a 0.02 percent zero-tolerance limit. Any amount of a controlled substance can also lead to an impaired-driving charge.
Graduated licensing
Idaho allows a Supervised Instruction Permit at 14 1/2 years of age, earlier than most states. New drivers must gain supervised experience before earning a driver's license.
Teen restrictions
Drivers under 16 may drive only during daylight unless a licensed adult 21 or older is in the front seat. During the first six months after licensing, passengers under 17 are limited, with exceptions for immediate family.
