Articles & Prepositions
Articles and prepositions are small words that strongly affect accuracy. This chapter covers when to use a, an, and the, and how to choose the right dependent preposition.
Definite and Indefinite Articles
Use 'the' with superlatives ('the most talented') and specific references. Choose 'a' or 'an' based on the following sound: 'an umbrella' because it starts with a vowel sound, but 'a university' because it starts with a 'y' sound.
Dependent Prepositions
Many adjectives and verbs require a fixed preposition: 'interested in', 'related to', 'good at'. These pairings must be memorized, as they rarely follow a predictable rule.
Prepositions with Places
Use 'arrive at' for specific points and buildings (arrive at the airport) but 'arrive in' for cities and countries (arrive in London). 'Arrive to' is not standard English.
