Sentence Transformation
Rephrasing a sentence while keeping its meaning demonstrates grammatical range. This chapter practises reported speech, the passive voice, and comparative and 'enough' structures.
Reported Speech
When reporting what someone said, shift tenses back ('will' becomes 'would') and adjust time words ('tomorrow' becomes 'the next day'). These consistent shifts turn direct speech into reported speech.
The Passive Voice
To make a sentence passive, move the object to the front and use 'be' plus the past participle. 'Someone stole my bicycle' becomes 'My bicycle was stolen', with the doer often omitted.
Comparatives and 'Enough'
A superlative can be rephrased with a comparative after a negative: 'the best I have seen' becomes 'I have never seen a better one'. 'Too young' equals 'not old enough', with 'enough' following the adjective.
