Iowa Producer Licensing
The state portion of the Iowa life and health exam begins with how a person becomes and stays a licensed producer in Iowa. This chapter covers the Iowa Insurance Division and its authority, the license and lines of authority needed to sell life and health products, how insurer appointments work, and the continuing-education and renewal rules that keep a license active. These state rules sit on top of the national concepts and are the most heavily weighted part of the Iowa supplement.
The Iowa Insurance Division and Its Authority
The Iowa Insurance Division regulates the business of insurance in Iowa, including the licensing and conduct of producers. It is headed by the Iowa Insurance Commissioner, who may issue, deny, suspend, and revoke licenses, adopt rules, investigate complaints, and enforce the state insurance code. A common exam point is simply knowing that this agency, not a separate financial-services department, is the licensing authority in Iowa.
License Lines and Appointments
To sell life and health products a resident generally holds a producer license with life and accident & health lines of authority, obtained by applying, passing the state examination, clearing a background/fingerprint check, and paying the fee. A license lets a person act as a producer, but to represent a specific insurer that insurer must appoint the producer and notify the Iowa Insurance Division. A producer may hold appointments with several insurers at once.
Continuing Education and Renewal
Iowa licenses are issued for a fixed term and renew on a schedule set by the Iowa Insurance Division. To renew, a resident life and health producer must complete the required continuing education, which includes ethics content, and pay the renewal fee. Missing CE or the renewal deadline can cause the license to lapse, after which reinstatement rules and penalties apply. Exact CE hours and fees are set by the state and can change, so always confirm current requirements with the Iowa Insurance Division.
