Florida No-Fault Auto Requirements

Florida is one of the few genuine no-fault auto states, and its minimum-coverage rules differ notably from most states.

No-Fault and PIP

Florida is a no-fault auto state. Every owner of a registered vehicle must carry personal injury protection (PIP) of at least 10,000 dollars, which pays the insured's own medical and related expenses regardless of who caused the crash. This first-party benefit is the core of Florida's no-fault system.

Property Damage Liability

Florida also requires property damage liability (PDL) of at least 10,000 dollars to pay for damage the insured causes to others' property. Together, PIP 10,000 and PDL 10,000 are the baseline Florida minimums verified via state auto insurance guidance.

Bodily Injury Liability Is Not Part of the Basic Minimum

Unlike most states, Florida's basic minimum does not force every driver to buy bodily injury (BI) liability up front; BI can become mandatory after certain events such as an at-fault crash or a serious violation under the financial responsibility law. Because these rules are frequently revisited by the legislature, confirm current requirements before advising a client.
