Florida Agent Licensing & CE
How a person becomes and stays a licensed general-lines (P&C) agent in Florida.
Getting Licensed
A resident general-lines agent obtains the license from the Florida Department of Financial Services after meeting eligibility, completing any required prelicensing course, passing the state examination, clearing a background check with fingerprints, and paying the fee. Confirm current prelicensing-hour and eligibility rules with the DFS.
Appointments and Continuing Education
In Florida an agent must be appointed by an insurer or appointing entity to transact that company's business; the appointment is filed with the DFS. Licenses require continuing education, including an ethics or law-and-ethics component, on Florida's CE cycle. Exact CE hour totals are set by the DFS and should be verified before renewal.
