Indiana Auto Coverage Requirements
Indiana is a traditional at-fault state with liability minimums producers must know cold.
Compulsory Liability Limits
Indiana requires minimum auto liability of $25,000 for bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage (a 25/50/25 limit), per Indiana Code 9-25-4-5 (property-damage minimum raised to $25,000 for accidents on or after July 1, 2018). Higher limits are available and often advisable; verify current minimums with the state before quoting them as fixed.
At-Fault System and Uninsured Motorist
Indiana uses a traditional at-fault (tort) system rather than no-fault: the at-fault driver's liability coverage responds to the other party's injury and damage claims. Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage protects the policyholder when the responsible driver has no or insufficient insurance; confirm the current offer-and-rejection rules with the Indiana Department of Insurance.
Proof of Insurance
Indiana requires drivers to carry and show proof of the mandatory coverage, and lapses can lead to fines and registration or license consequences. Producers should warn clients that gaps in coverage are costly to cure.
