Louisiana Auto & Property Coverage Requirements
This chapter covers the coverage rules a Louisiana producer must know to place personal auto correctly: the compulsory liability limits, Louisiana's at-fault (tort) system, and how uninsured motorist coverage is offered.
Compulsory Auto Liability Limits
Louisiana requires minimum auto liability limits of $15,000 bodily injury per person, $30,000 per accident, and $25,000 property damage (15/30/25), per the Insurance Information Institute state financial-responsibility chart. These are minimums; insureds may and often should buy higher limits. Because the legislature can raise minimums, verify the current figures with the Louisiana Department of Insurance before quoting them as fixed.
At-Fault System and Uninsured Motorist Coverage
Louisiana is a traditional at-fault (tort) state rather than a no-fault state: injury and damage claims are generally pursued against the driver responsible for the accident, and bodily injury and property damage liability are the required coverages. Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage is not imposed as a flat minimum; instead insurers must offer UM and the insured may reject it or select lower limits in writing, so producers should document the client's UM election. Confirm the current framework and UM rules with the Louisiana Department of Insurance when advising clients.
