Maryland Auto Coverage Requirements
This chapter covers the coverage rules a Maryland producer must know to place personal auto correctly: the compulsory liability limits, mandatory UM/UIM and PIP, and Maryland's add-on approach to the right to sue.
Compulsory Liability, UM/UIM, and PIP
Maryland requires minimum auto liability of $30,000 bodily injury per person, $60,000 per accident, and $15,000 property damage (30/60/15), per the Insurance Information Institute state financial-responsibility chart. Maryland also requires uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage and personal injury protection (PIP). PIP provides first-party medical and wage-loss benefits and may be waived in writing under certain conditions. These are minimums; verify the current figures, PIP amount, and waiver rules with the Maryland Insurance Administration.
Add-On PIP, Not No-Fault
Maryland is an add-on state rather than a no-fault state: it requires PIP first-party benefits, but an injured person keeps the full right to sue the at-fault driver for damages. This distinguishes Maryland from true no-fault states, which restrict lawsuits below a threshold. Because states periodically revisit their auto systems, confirm the current framework with the Maryland Insurance Administration when advising clients.
