Maine Auto Coverage Requirements
This chapter covers the coverage rules a Maine producer must know to place personal auto correctly. Maine has among the highest compulsory limits in the country and mandates UM/UIM and medical payments coverage.
Compulsory Liability, UM/UIM, and Medical Payments
Per the Maine Bureau of Insurance, Maine requires minimum auto liability of $50,000 bodily injury per person, $100,000 per accident, and $25,000 property damage (50/100/25), or a combined single limit of $125,000. Maine also mandates uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage of at least $50,000 per person / $100,000 per accident, and at least $2,000 per person in medical payments coverage. A UM limit must equal the liability limit when that exceeds the minimum, unless the insured declines the higher amount in writing. These are minimums; verify current figures with the Maine Bureau of Insurance.
At-Fault System
Maine is a traditional at-fault (tort) state rather than a no-fault state: injury and damage claims are generally pursued against the driver responsible for the accident, and the mandatory UM/UIM coverage fills the gap when that driver is uninsured or underinsured. Because states periodically revisit their auto systems, confirm the current framework with the Maine Bureau of Insurance when advising clients.
