Missouri Auto Coverage Requirements

This chapter covers the coverage rules a Missouri producer must know to place personal auto correctly: the compulsory liability limits, the required uninsured motorist coverage, and Missouri's tort (at-fault) system.

Compulsory Liability and Uninsured Motorist

Missouri requires minimum auto liability of $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident, and $10,000 property damage (25/50/10). Missouri also requires uninsured motorist (UM) bodily injury coverage, which protects the insured when injured by a driver who carries no insurance. Missouri does not mandate no-fault personal injury protection. These are minimums set by state law; verify the current liability and UM figures with the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance.

Tort System and the Right to Sue

Missouri is a tort, or at-fault, state: because it does not require no-fault PIP, an injured person keeps the full right to sue the at-fault driver for both economic and noneconomic damages, and there is no statutory threshold to clear before filing. Compulsory liability and UM coverage stand behind drivers on Missouri roads. Confirm the current framework with the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance when advising clients.
