Oregon Auto Coverage Requirements

This chapter covers the coverage rules an Oregon producer must know to place personal auto correctly: the compulsory liability limits, Oregon's tort (at-fault) system, and the additional coverages Oregon requires beyond bare liability.

Compulsory Liability Limits

Oregon's financial-responsibility law requires every registered vehicle to carry liability insurance at the state minimum limits. Under ORS 806.070, the minimum limits are $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury and $20,000 per accident for property damage (25/50/20). These figures were confirmed this session at oregon.public.law/statutes/ors_806.070. Because statutory minimums can change, verify the current numbers with the Oregon Division of Financial Regulation.

Tort System and Additional Required Coverages

Oregon is a tort, or at-fault, state: it is not on the Insurance Information Institute's list of no-fault states, so an injured person keeps the right to sue the at-fault driver for damages. Oregon is notable, however, for requiring more than bare liability: state law also mandates additional coverages such as personal injury protection (PIP) and uninsured motorist coverage on personal auto policies. The exact minimum dollar amounts for PIP and uninsured motorist coverage were not confirmed against a primary source this session; verify the current minimums with the Oregon Division of Financial Regulation.
