Utah Auto Coverage Requirements

This chapter covers the coverage rules a Utah producer must know to place personal auto correctly: Utah's no-fault (PIP) system and its compulsory liability limits.

Utah Is a No-Fault State

Utah is one of the minority of states with a no-fault auto system. Drivers must carry personal injury protection (PIP) with a minimum medical benefit of not less than $3,000 per person under Utah Code 31A-22-307, so first-party PIP pays covered medical and related expenses regardless of who caused the crash. A lawsuit for general damages such as pain and suffering is limited unless the claim meets a statutory threshold. Confirm the current PIP rules with the Utah Insurance Department.

Compulsory Liability Limits

In addition to PIP, Utah requires liability coverage. Under Utah Code 31A-22-304, for policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2025 the minimums are $30,000 per person and $65,000 per accident for bodily injury and $25,000 for property damage (30/65/25), or a $90,000 combined single limit; the earlier minimums were 25/65/15 (or an $80,000 single limit). Note the distinctive $65,000 per-accident figure. Because these figures can change, verify the current minimums with the Utah Insurance Department.
