Safe & Defensive Driving

Space, scanning and courtesy help you avoid collisions and share the road safely.

Following distance

Keep at least a two-second gap behind the vehicle ahead in good conditions and increase it in poor weather. This gives you time to see hazards and stop.

Blind spots and lane changes

Mirrors do not show the blind spot, so signal, check mirrors and glance over your shoulder before changing lanes. Yield to pedestrians at crosswalks and intersections.

Move over for emergency vehicles

When you approach a stopped emergency vehicle or tow truck with flashing lights, slow down and, if you can, move over to leave a lane of space. This protects roadside workers.
