Speed & Winter Conditions

Drive to the posted limit and to the road, weather and traffic, especially in Manitoba winters.

Speed limits

Unless a sign says otherwise, the default limit in a city or town is 50 km/h. Always adjust your speed downward when visibility or traction is poor, even below the posted limit.

Snow and ice

Snow and ice sharply reduce traction, so slow down and increase your following distance. Smooth, gentle steering and braking help you keep control.

Skids and black ice

If you start to skid, ease off the accelerator and steer smoothly toward where you want to go. Black ice is a thin, nearly invisible layer that looks like wet pavement and makes the road extremely slippery.
