Water, Drainage, Gas, and Storm Sizing
The master plumber exam is built on calculation, and this is the chapter where most of the arithmetic lives. You are expected to move from a fixture-unit count to a pipe size, hold the right slope over a run, balance a pressure budget from the meter to the most remote fixture, convert an appliance BTU rating into gas flow and then into pipe size, and size roof drainage from a rainfall rate. Each of these follows a repeatable procedure: total the load, convert the load to a flow, and read the flow against a sizing table at the governing length or slope. Master the four conversions in this chapter, WSFU to gpm, DFU to drain size, BTU to cfh, and roof area to storm gpm, and most of the sizing questions become mechanical.
Advanced Systems and Code
Beyond sizing, the master plumber is responsible for the specialized systems that protect health and property: advanced venting arrangements, interceptors and separators, sumps and ejectors, backwater protection, water heaters and recirculation, and the family of backflow assemblies that keep the potable supply clean. This chapter also covers where the Uniform Plumbing Code and the International Plumbing Code diverge, because the master plumber must design to the model actually adopted locally. The unifying theme is separation: keeping contaminated water out of the potable supply, keeping sewer gas out of the building, keeping grease, oil, and chemicals out of the sewer, and keeping backflow from a surcharged main out of low fixtures.
Fuel-Gas and Specialty Gas Systems
Fuel-gas work adds a distinct body of code centered on delivering the right volume of gas safely, supplying enough combustion air, venting products of combustion by appliance category, protecting corrugated stainless steel tubing from lightning-induced arcing, and proving the system tight before it is used. The master plumber also touches specialty gases, medical and industrial, where cleanliness, non-interchangeable connections, and cross-connection testing are life-safety matters. This chapter connects the BTU-to-cfh sizing from Chapter 1 to the field requirements that make a gas system safe: combustion air, venting categories, bonding, and testing.
Code Administration, Plans, and Business
A master plumber is not only a technician but the responsible party of record who pulls permits, submits plans, calls inspections, and stands behind the work as code-compliant. This chapter covers the administrative spine of a project: the permit and plan-review process, the sequence of inspections and the tests that prove the work, how to read and produce the drawings, and the estimating and scheduling arithmetic that keeps a plumbing business solvent. The recurring principle is that the permit ties a licensed professional to the adopted code, and that documented approvals, from plan review to backflow test reports, are what actually close a project.
Job-Site Safety and Public Health
Plumbing safety spans two arenas: protecting workers on the job and protecting the public through clean water. This chapter covers the OSHA and Cal/OSHA rules that dominate plumbing fieldwork, excavation and trenching, confined-space entry into sewers, hot work for brazing, rigging and ladders, and the handling of legacy lead and asbestos, alongside the public-health role of backflow prevention. The through-line is that most plumbing fatalities are foreseeable, from trench cave-ins and toxic sewer atmospheres to backdrafting appliances and contaminated water, and each is controlled by a specific, testable rule.
