At C2 level, vocabulary items test precise, often formal or literary words. Distinguishing close synonyms and recognising connotation is essential.
Precision and Connotation
Options may share a rough meaning but differ in force or tone. A convincing argument is 'cogent'; a harshly critical review is 'scathing' and leaves someone 'demoralised'. Reading the whole sentence reveals whether a positive or negative word is required.
Formal and Abstract Nouns
Advanced items often hinge on abstract nouns such as 'impasse' (a deadlock) or verbs of intensity such as 'fuel' versus 'quell'. Building a store of these higher-register words is the best preparation.
