Rules of the Road & Right of Way
Right-of-way rules keep intersections, roundabouts, and school-bus stops safe. Minnesota law tells you when to yield and includes the Ted Foss Move Over law for roadside workers.
Intersections and roundabouts
At a four-way stop, yield to the driver on your right when you arrive together. At a roundabout, yield to traffic already circulating and enter a safe gap, driving counterclockwise to the right.
Turning and school buses
On a left turn, yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians until it is safe. Stop at least 20 feet from a school bus with flashing red lights and an extended stop arm on undivided roads, in both directions.
Move Over law
Minnesota's Ted Foss Move Over law requires drivers on roads with two or more lanes in their direction to move over a full lane away from a stopped emergency vehicle with flashing lights, or to slow down if they cannot move over safely.
