Sharing the Road Safely
Minnesota drivers share the road with motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians, and large trucks. Because these road users differ in size and visibility, giving space and looking carefully protects everyone.
Motorcycles
A motorcycle is entitled to a full lane. Never share a lane with one, check your blind spots before changing lanes, and allow extra following distance because motorcycles are small and easy to miss.
Bicycles and pedestrians
Minnesota requires at least three feet of space when passing a bicyclist, and you may cross the center line to pass when safe. Stop and yield to pedestrians crossing at corners and crosswalks, marked or unmarked.
Large trucks
Trucks have large blind spots and swing wide on turns. Never try to pass a right-turning truck on its right, stay out of the No-Zones, and give trucks extra room to stop.
