Speed & Road Conditions
Posted limits are maximums for good conditions. Minnesota's hard winters mean drivers must slow down, keep control, and leave more room to stop on snow and ice.
Winter and slippery roads
On snow or ice, reduce speed, increase following distance, and steer and brake smoothly. Do not use cruise control on slippery roads, and expect bridges and shaded spots to freeze first.
Skids
If you skid, ease off the gas and steer gently in the direction you want the front of the car to go. Avoid slamming the brakes, which can make a skid worse, and regain control gradually.
Visibility and following distance
Use the three-second rule in good conditions and add time in snow, fog, or heavy traffic. In fog or snow, slow down and use low beams because high beams reflect and reduce what you can see.
