Masonry

Masonry (4 of 115 items) covers brick, block, and mortar. This chapter reviews mortar types and their uses.

Mortar types (ASTM C270)

The standard mortar types, in descending compressive strength, are Type M, Type S, Type N, and Type O. Type M has the highest strength and is used where high compressive and lateral strength is needed, such as below-grade or load-bearing foundation masonry; Type N is a common general-purpose mortar for above-grade walls; Type O is a low-strength interior mortar. Selecting the right mortar balances strength against workability and bond.
