Structural steel connections
Modern structural steel is connected chiefly by high-strength bolting and welding, following AISC standards. Field bolting is fast and readily inspected, while welding provides continuous connections; riveting is largely obsolete for new work. Connections are critical load paths, so bolted joints are checked for proper tension and welds are inspected, sometimes by nondestructive testing.
