Client Relations & Behavioral Coaching
This chapter addresses communication, motivation, and behavior-change strategies that help clients adhere to their programs. Building rapport and setting goals are central to long-term success.
Behavior Change
The stages-of-change (transtheoretical) model describes a progression from precontemplation, where a person is not yet considering change, through contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. Matching coaching strategies to a client's stage improves engagement.
Goal Setting
SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely. Well-formed goals give clients clear targets and a sense of accountability, supporting motivation and adherence.
Communication Skills
Active, reflective listening, paraphrasing what the client says to confirm understanding, builds trust and clarifies goals. Empathy, encouragement, and respectful feedback strengthen the trainer-client relationship.
