Management of Care
Management of Care is the largest client-needs category on the NCLEX-RN and tests the registered nurse's ability to coordinate care, delegate appropriately, prioritize among clients, and protect client rights. Success requires applying frameworks such as ABC, Maslow's hierarchy, and the nursing process to decide who to see first and what to do next.
Safety and Infection Control
Safety and Infection Control focuses on protecting clients, staff, and visitors from injury and the spread of infection. The nurse applies standard and transmission-based precautions, prevents falls and errors, and responds correctly to emergencies such as fire and hazardous exposures.
Health Promotion and Maintenance
Health Promotion and Maintenance addresses the nurse's role in supporting wellness across the lifespan through screening, immunization, growth and development, and lifestyle counseling. The nurse teaches clients to prevent disease and detect problems early.
Psychosocial Integrity
Psychosocial Integrity addresses the emotional, mental, and social needs of clients experiencing stress, crisis, mental illness, or loss. The nurse uses therapeutic communication, ensures safety, and supports coping and grief.
Basic Care and Comfort
Basic Care and Comfort addresses the fundamental activities of daily living: nutrition, elimination, mobility, hygiene, rest, and skin integrity. The nurse provides safe, evidence-based care that promotes comfort and prevents complications of immobility.
Pharmacological and Parenteral Therapies
Pharmacological and Parenteral Therapies tests safe medication administration, dosage calculation, monitoring for therapeutic and adverse effects, and management of high-alert drugs. The nurse applies the rights of medication administration and drug-class knowledge to protect the client.
Physiological Adaptation and Reduction of Risk
Physiological Adaptation is the largest physiological content area, covering the care of clients with acute, chronic, and life-threatening conditions. The nurse interprets laboratory values, manages fluid and electrolyte and acid-base balance, and recognizes complications requiring urgent intervention.
