Space, awareness, and respect for vulnerable road users prevent most crashes.
Following distance
Keep at least a three-second gap behind the vehicle ahead in good conditions, and increase it in rain, fog, or heavy traffic. Extra space gives you time to see and react to hazards.
Lane changes and blind spots
Mirrors do not reveal blind spots, so signal, check mirrors, and glance over your shoulder before changing lanes. Move over only when the lane is clearly open.
Sharing with others
Bicyclists and motorcyclists have a right to the road, so pass at a safe distance and watch for them at intersections. North Carolina's Move Over Law requires moving over a lane, or slowing down, for stopped emergency and utility vehicles with flashing lights.
