Traffic Signs & Signals
Signs, signals, and markings state the rules and warn of hazards on North Carolina roads.
Shapes and colors
A red octagon means STOP and a downward triangle means YIELD. Yellow diamond signs warn of hazards ahead, while white regulatory signs, such as speed limits, state laws you must obey.
Traffic signals
A steady red means stop and a steady yellow warns that red is coming. A flashing red is treated like a stop sign, and a flashing yellow means slow down and proceed with caution.
Pavement markings
Yellow lines separate traffic moving in opposite directions, and double solid yellow lines mark a no-passing zone. White lines divide lanes going the same way; a broken white line may be crossed to change lanes when safe.
